Daniel L. Schwartz has been dean of the Stanford Graduate School of Education since 1 September 2015, holding the I. James Quillen Deanship and the Nomellini and Olivier Professorship in Educational Technology. He joined the Stanford faculty in 2000 from Vanderbilt, where he was a professor of psychology and human development.
His work sits where cognitive science, computer science and education meet, and one of his better-known ideas inverts the usual arrangement of a classroom and a computer: make it so that children teach the computer, and they learn by teaching. He is a co-author, with Jessica M. Tsang and Kristen P. Blair, of The ABCs of How We Learn, published by W. W. Norton.
In 2021 he received both the Klaus J. Jacobs Research Prize and the American Psychological Association Division 15 Career Achievement Award. He also serves as Halper Family Faculty Director of the Stanford Accelerator for Learning, on a premise he states directly: learning is one of the single most important levers available for improving the human condition. Before his academic career he taught maths in rural Kenya, English in Los Angeles, and several subjects in the village of Kaltag, Alaska.
